Today’s video if you watch till the end Will solve 99 of all of your dog Training problems guaranteed I’m Zach I’m a professional dog trainer and this Is my wife Bree and we’re showing you How we train our dogs everything if you Like dogs subscribe to our Channel our New episode Starts Now inertia you know Everyone wants an update from you to see How you’re doing I think it’s time for a Pup quiz we really need to make sure Your Basics are down lie down stand Sit Stay Come Heal but my understanding inertia is That you’re an honor student this Month’s box couldn’t be more on bark to School gonna have to do something extra Special to earn a gold star inertia and No sleeping in class we I love how Bart Keeps everything so fresh and so Interesting because that keeps my dog Interested in training which is huge Multiple texture toys like this she goes Crazy for it so the detail and dimension Of bark toys will certainly exceed your Expectations they do mine good go get it Job well done today I’m gonna give these To her later these shoes don’t forget We’ve got to put your homework in your Backpack it’s like so many toys in one I Think you might be at the super chewer Level inertia super tour boxes for those Dogs who are really tough on toys these

Are about the most durable school Supplies I mean dog toys that I’ve ever Seen oh it’s a pencil sharpener and a Pencil obviously you can put treats in Here like that and you’ll get really High quality treats with every box you Can see how many treats I put in but When I turn it over look at that your Dog has to work a little extra hard to Get these to come out these toys are so Valuable you’re going to have to Practically do somersaults to get a Reward good I think inertia gets an A plus all of You can try BarkBox out and get a free Box when you sign up for a subscription At barkbox.com dog training or Superchewer.com dog training I’ll have Links below I think a thing that a lot Of us have in common on this channel is That we’re interested in learning the Science and the Art of teaching and Raising dogs we find ourselves in Northern Montana today surrounded by Wildlife water and lots of woods and I Want to share something with you today That really fundamentally changed the Way that I look at training dogs I’m Reminded about a metaphor that I used to Give to my dog training students all the Time that is training a dog is a lot Like making a campfire and so what do I Mean by that I mean first you have to Have a spark right and sometimes that

Spark is the hardest bit to get the Thing going ouch I found myself thinking Many times how am I supposed to get a Dog to pay attention to me if they’re Constantly biting and jumping and only Sometimes interested in what I’m Offering them much less teach them how To be super well-mannered like all of The time time the first rule of building A campfire is to set yourself up for Success so I’ve got some of this Wonderful dry moss I’m finding on the Ground everywhere here and some little Twigs we want this fire to fuel itself We don’t want to take shortcuts like Putting lighter fluid or gasoline on the Fire because those results are Artificial and they’re short-lived That’s not authentic methodically Setting up the fire like this is the Equivalent of setting up our dog’s Environment for Success I’ve never had So much pressure to actually produce a Good campfire I mean I’ve really put Myself on the spot here you don’t want To rush this part of the process if You’ve ever built a fire before you’ll Know if you just try to burn a log That’s pretty tough to do it’s really Important to have a good foundation Something that’s likely to succeed so it Doesn’t just smolder out you know you Can see we have some dried Moss some Twigs things that are easy to burn

Things that are likely to be successful We’re not trying to do everything all at Once because we want to keep the process As smooth as possible we need to make Things extremely likely to work to Succeed and we want to do that early Whereas here I’m finding easy things to Burn with our dogs we need to find Things that are easy for them to Understand and accomplish at first that Was a real natural look at me when I Asked for it inertia look at me the way To teach them language I think anyway is To be very purposeful about it I don’t Exactly know how to make a campfire with Like a flint or two sticks so I will be Using a lighter but I think the metaphor Still holds true now the Moment of Truth The spark how does this thing work Is this broken oh I think it’s child Proof See one click it didn’t Spark Man this lighter doesn’t work this Lighter is broken this would be very Frustrating if your lighter stopped Working when you’re trying to build a Fire you know what else is frustrating Though oh inertia you’re gonna make me Work huh a dog that doesn’t know how to Pay attention to you yet Oh it started to spark But it won’t stay lit I mean a second Ago it was fine inertia look at me good And now it’s like it’s not even

Functioning right anymore ow oh my gosh Okay good This is so delicate right now I’m gonna Light it from the bottom want a strong Foundation here so I’m Lighting in Several places here right now I’m just Getting smoke though it’s not coming Easy it’s not like oh just light the Fire and you have a great campfire and If we try to skip steps in between like Trying to burn a big log that’s going to Expose a flaw with my process she’s in a Leash biting frenzy looks like I need to Slow down a bit pretty sure inertia Thinks we’ve lost it we’re living Outside Although she seems to be enjoying it Just fine she’s got dirt all over her Face you guys oh good the campfire is so Delicate at this point you have to Really be patient with it you can’t rush The process okay get content here just Because I started to have a little Success no no or else it’ll just start Smoking and we just had rain so I’ve got To be extra patient sometimes blowing on It helps Sometimes playing tug with a dog can Really rekindle their interest in you And learning and I have my first twig on Fire now and you know Twigs stay on fire Longer than the dry vegetation so I Might need to reposition a little bit I Might need to adjust my strategy here

And maybe I’ll put this twig a little Over here where it’s starting to get Traction in other words I want to be Flexible I don’t just want to assume the Fire is going to work because I thought I designed it exactly right she’s like Wait a minute I don’t understand this See she’s bucking up there a little bit Saying I want to go this way So you can see there just being silly I Became way more interesting to her a Little smoky at first doesn’t really Look like a perfect campfire man I’ve Been working on this for kind of a long Time now many many minutes it’s not Going as easy as I had hoped and see I Think this is the point where we’re Training our dogs sometimes we’re like You know what it just doesn’t work I Have not done something right I can’t Get the fire to get going hey let go No But I have a hunch that if we stick with It and we’re patient and we’re Consistent we put in our time but we Will eventually get something going here Okay Let go yes he did it he did it Hi we did it but look how much time it Takes in the beginning you can’t take Your attention off the fire if your Attention is divided the fire probably Goes out at this stage and then all of a Sudden it starts to rain now I’ve really

Got the odds stacked against me Sometimes unforeseen things happen that Doesn’t mean we give up on our fire well Depending on how bad the rain is I guess I mean we’re starting to get somewhere But again if you get over confident at This point in the game then it’s like You run the real risk of losing all your Progress just like a dog when the fire Is Young it requires the most attention Oh yeah we got a flame going but I’m Also feeling Raindrops and still even now as it’s Getting going if I tried to put a big Log on there you can imagine what might Happen it could really smother the whole Thing much better to take lots of little Steps to ensure success first it always Helps to have a patient frame of mind Train and environments that make you Feel good that make your dog feel good If possible now that the fire is getting Warmer and ready to handle a tougher Challenge I think I can now start to put A slightly bigger piece of wood on the Fire here’s a real nice piece of wood Here I cut this one myself cut all this Myself actually I think I don’t know What I’m doing Really yeah you’re so impressed huh Yes [Laughter] Continue to set the fire up for success By presenting the nice easy to burn side

The dry side here and even still it can Be tempting to put lots more giant Pieces of wood on here so that you can Kind of forget about it for a minute no Try to do too much too soon you Guarantee failure if you don’t do enough Too soon you guarantee failure says why Consistency is important in campfires And in dog training starting to get some Crackling here get some life to it Starting to learn the personality of the Fire and notice it’s very rich here in The center but has yet to spread out and Become a full-fledged fire it hasn’t Generalized its environment so much yet All right inertia has decided to come Back and join us see I’m not interested In getting a campfire that just burns For a little bit or doesn’t really take I’m interested in building a campfire That’s robust and once it becomes full Enough I don’t need to give it much Guidance at all I just need to give it The necessary attention to thrive maybe If I kind of angle this one over here it Might catch better circumstances are Never exactly as you predict that right There tells me I’m going to have to do Some desensitizing around mules over the Coming months if she’s acting like this Around a mule we’re going to have no Chance if she encounters real or Dangerous wildlife someday it’s a bear That’s okay it’s good good girl

She’s getting better That’s why it’s important to stay on top Of it and make adjustments where Necessary okay Stay there’s an elk she’s spotted the Elk there’s an elk over there be good Come Good girl so she saw the elk I was able To quickly get her attention on me do You know how hard we had to work to be Able to get that even if one part of the Fire starts to get weak the fact that we Built a generally Sound fire with lots Of different points of success means That we can fall back on that so we have A strong Foundation Stay We have the small Twigs burning the Slightly larger wood now even bigger Wood let’s get that really strong before We move on and try and do something more Complicated oh it’s coming to life now Guys constantly just making little Tweaks here trying to make it as perfect As possible maybe I’ll do this Sure it’s got room to breathe in there That should be very interesting guys and One of the whole points of building a Campfire at least in this day and age is To be able to throw that big log on There and know that it’s going to burn And know that it’s going to do exactly What you want it to but you can never Take your attention completely off of

The fire it always requires some kind of Maintenance this is the log I have Chosen it has a bark on it generally Makes it a little tougher to burn but if The fire is strong enough it might take Hopefully this will work Good luck log now that the fire is big And roaring you’re seeing these logs Burn with ease and I could mess with it A little bit I could throw things off But the fire’s so strong that it’s going To continue to survive at this point and You know what a really good fire might Even withstand a rainstorm too well Is persistent that’s literally raining Right now and our fire is still Surviving the unexpected happens Sometimes you get a fire and Circumstances are different than you Thought they would be what do you do Well we manage I’m going to continue Stirring this fire and provided I’m Diligent enough we can survive even a Moderate rain shower I think we got a Shot guys I don’t know about you guys But sitting here in the rain in Montana Next to my fire is so deeply satisfying For some reason I didn’t want to go Inside roofs are overrated Rain is definitely picking up now nature Is giving me its best shot right now Come on Fire come on pretty sure this is Exactly what it was like To be Lewis and Clark by starting off

Right not taking too many shortcuts There we built a strong Foundation Hopefully And hopefully that will get us through These kinds of storms can you be quiet There’s a bison over here I want you to Be quiet Good girl that’s a bison So that’s real Good girl and suddenly I started to see New life in my fire the rain was still Continuing but my fire burned anyway I’m Really into this metaphor each layer Feeds the next and when you combine Everything and total it out you have Such an amazing fire well I just want to Remember this campsite so I’m gonna take Video this is where I learned the ways Of nature this is where I learned how to Be self-sufficient I no longer need the Conveniences of modern technology I have Everything I need right here oh I wonder If there’s a McDonald’s nearby because I Am hungry You doing girl she’s enjoying herself I Don’t know that inertia has ever seen a Campfire and how sad is that she really Seems to be taking to it though she’s Mesmerized clearly a nurse’s fire is Roaring but Veronica is still just Starting to spark subscribe to see how We turn her into a totally trained fire I I mean dog get a free BarkBox or super Chewer box at barkbox.com dog training
